Students in Dr. Eric S. Millers (@svisionary) Scottsdale Community College (CIS 120 – Spring 2012) Adobe Photoshop Class were required to search the web and locate an inspirational photoshop artist, to write a few paragraphs about the artist and to include their favorite image by the artist. Here are the amazing artist they selected.

Andy Pickering – Jerico Santander @jericosantander

Jerico Santander is a 25 year old digital artist from the Canary Islands of Spain. He was an artist at a very young age until a few years ago traded in his paper and pencils for a digital format. He has worked for a small creative agency called “Atutiplen”. He has since started to work as an independent freelance artist. He has worked for and with agencies and companies ranging all over the globe, including companies such as Dreamworks, Nissan, Bud Light and Hugo Boss.

Self described as using elements of colors, balance, and surrealism as keystones to his work through platforms of photography, 3D graphics and digital painting to bring forth his vision of art. He inspires me by how his images evoke emotion and creativity, almost in a dream like fashion. Photography is near and dear to my heart and I believe should always be the basis on formulating a photoshopped image (at least it will be for me). Although his images are more cartoon-like than photography based, the colors really attract me to his images.

He has a website at www.jericosantander.com. He also can be found on multiple websites such as the Behance Network, Gods of art.com, Design modo and Artistic Things. He has been featured in Format Magazine. He does have a twitter and Facebook account, but doesn’t appear to use those as his primary networking sources.

Paula Klimas – Maciej Mizer

The famous graphic artist Maciej Mizer, otherwise known as mOsk, creates photoshop images for many different companies. He works with honda, nike, ecko unltd. and many other well- known brands to create eye-catching advertising campaigns. He lives and works out of Poland and specializes in 3D graphics, illustrations, web design, and photography. Mizer has a facebook presence, and also is featured on Fuse and Behance.

I love his artwork in particular because it is super colorful, but not overwhelming. All of his pieces have really balanced color schemes, positive and negative balance, and strong placement. I like that he incorporates natural colors and objects like leaves and animals into some of his more digital pieces. He also creates fantasy scenes that showcase how vivid his imagination is, as well as how skilled he is in graphic design. I definitely can see why his work is in such high demand, and is recognized and respected by artists around the world.

Mizer’s work can be found on his own website, as well as Facebook, Fuse, and Behance, as well as sites like DeviantArt that are devoted to diehard art fans. He regularly Facebooks and is receptive to his fans and seems eager to help others learn the tricks of his craft.

Austin Howard – Rado Javor

Rado Javor is a digital painter from Slovakia. His work ranges from historic to futuristic. He uses a Wacom tablet and Photoshop to render his pictures on a Windows 7 machine. His interests are painting, HI-FI music, cars, book, history, and photography.

Rado’s art is spectacularly detailed and vivid. I like his work because I am a big fan of history and the future and he has managed to reach both ends of that spectrum. His art has phenomenal clarity as that of a photograph and makes it look like he was there in the places with a camera instead of ideas coming out of a person’s head. (plus he does some Star Wars pictures which I am a huge fan of).

Rado’s artwork can be found at http://radojavor.deviantart.com/ and on his own personal blog http://rado-javor.blogspot.com/ along with pictures of his travels and interests.

Bill Mitchell – Bill Atkinson <s>@</s>billatk

Bill Atkinson has a long history of artistic and software development. As a member of the original Macintosh team, he designed most of the original interface, wrote QuickDraw (the Mac’s original graphics engine), MacPaint (a bitmap graphics painting program) and HyperCard (hypermedia linking) software. He most recently wrote a free IOS app: PhotoCard .

Camera: Hasselblad medium format camera, with a 39 megapixel digital back.
Printer: Epson Stylus Pro 11880 with Archival Pigment Ink & Brilliance Chromata Canvas.
Software: Photoshop

His photos are simple but detailed. The colors are intense but not over saturated. The canvas prints look like paintings. The finished products are of extremely high quality and typically sell for between $1,200 and $2,600.

Bill’s prints can be found in multiple fine-art galleries: Capture / Healdsburg, CA; Dostal Studio / Sausalito, CA; The Ansel Adams Gallery / Yosemite, CA and The Museum Works Gallery / Aspen, CO.

Debbie Matzke – NEIL DUERDEN

Website: neilduerden.co.uk
Linked In: uklinkedin.com/in/neilduerden
Blog: neilduerden.blogspot.com

Illustrate the Future!

That is, Aquarian, Neil Duerden’s mantra. He finds inspiration in the world around him. It can be a directive from a client or noticing the details in nature. He is a master at combining both a directive and nature’s details. For example, he finds inspiration from the seeds of a sliced cucumber.

Neil is a freelance designer with over 20 years of experience. Prior to taking the plunge to go on his own he worked as an illustrator for a large design agency. What pushed him to move on was his frustration with safe advertising solutions vs. creative solutions.

What I like about his work is he does push the boundaries of advertising with creative solutions. His images are powerful and speak on their own as noted in the Porche ad. He takes his creativity in a totally opposite direction with the image of a woman in green advertising beauty and serenity and then he branches in whimsy with the Nissan display.

Neil enjoys the challenge of working on project collaborations. The work takes a free flow pattern of experimentation. He says “ No one can deny that after a truly great new joint piece they take a little of each others’ style on board.” Sometimes these collaborations change an artist’s style completely.

Paulette Kim – Nik Ainley

After an extensive search for an artist who uses Adobe Photoshop as their primary design tool, UK-based designer, Nik Ainley, has an impressive portfolio. Although Nik possesses a degree in Physics and professionally started a career in web design, he is currently a freelance digital illustrator. What started out as random Photoshop doodling as a hobby turned into a love for digital design. Scoring well-known clients such as Adobe, British Airways, Capital One, ESPN, Esquire, MTV, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, Nike, Pepsi, Starbucks, UNICEF, Vodafone, and so on exemplifies this Photoshop artist’s talent. His portfolio mainly consists of intricate typeface and graphically manipulated portraits.

What I like about Nik’s work is his elaborate typography and his clever mix of 2D and 3D techniques. His typeface designs are intricate, vivid, flamboyant, yet subtle; it reminds me of urban murals and graffiti. His infusion of 2D and 3D elements exude energy and movement. He has an eye for great color choices and texture combinations. In my opinion, much of his work is futuristic-looking, attention-getting, creatively-designed eye candy with simple subjects. The idea of being a self-taught Photoshop artist and having furthered his expertise in digital design successfully is an inspiration in itself.

If anyone is interested in Nik Ainley and the hype I’ve briefly reported, check out the artist’s portfolio at www.shinybinary.com. The website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Nik also has digital presence on FaceBook, LinkedIn, YouTube, DeviantArt (blog-like site), Behance Network, CG Society, and Photoshop Spotlight. Tutorials by Nik are also available online.

DJ Lockwood – Peter Jaworowski @thehejz

Peter Jaworowski is Design Director & Co-Founder of Warsaw-based creative agency, Ars Thanea and Co-owner of The Hejz, which is a portfolio of all his work. Born in Poland, Peter was into playing multi-player games when a friend showed him an early version of Paint Shop Pro. He then switched to Adobe PhotoShop 6 and has been working in the creative field for about five years. He studied at Warsaw Higher Institute of Information Technology. At only 20 years old, Pete’s clients include CocaCola, Nokia, Mercedes, Mazda, Nike, Nissan, Sony PlayStation, Puma, Visa, Martini, Nokia, Discovery Channel, Samsonite, Bacardi, Polaroid, and Avatar the Game. He has received many awards and honors for his advertising pieces and been featured in various magazines including Luerzer’s Archive, Page, Computer Arts (UK, FR), Advanced Photoshop Magazine, idN Magazine, Joia Magazine, PSD Magazine, Joice, Aktivist, Bak, & Idea Design Magazine. He has been involved in judging international work as a Grand Jury Member of the New York Festivals 2010 – Innovative Advertising Awards and KTR (Polish Cannes Lions Representative) 2010 & 2011.

I enjoy the imagination Peter brings to his images, and there are tons of them on line. He daily visits websites like Behance and others to grab pictures he uses in his images. He brings lots of color, detail, and motion to still pictures including 3D effects. His pictures are innovative and show originality. I enjoy the picture I chose because of the dramatic lighting effects including the eye which is so real. Other images he has done show lot of bright colors and again white sunlight splashes or dots which I appreciate on a dark background.

Googling “Peter Jaworowski” shows he is quite popular and well known for his work as you can tell by his clients. Below is where you can find him:

Andrew Gleason - Alberto Seveso

Through extensive search online I found an artist by the name of Alberto Seveso, a photo shop artist from Italy. As I am into photography myself, I tried to find an artist who still has apparent use of photography based vector art. Alberto Seveso primarily uses black and white photographs for his base and then goes and adds in splashes of color in interesting shapes and patterns. Most of his subjects are just up against a black background with dramatic shadowing and contrasts. The portraits in his work all appear to be breaking apart of flaking off of themselves. Seveso has done edits for magazines for many athletes, including Kelly Slater and Michael Phelps along with some album art and covers.

I couldn’t find a lot of information about Seveso’s background but his edits seem to be very technology based and futuristic. A lot of the people that are breaking apart in his edits have gears, plates, or other mechanical objects underneath their skin. His images are very impressive and inspiring to me. I could definitely see myself wanting to try to imitate some of his works. I’m sure learning to create such intricate pieces of art took many years of practice though. Viewing his collections gave me many great ideas. I am very excited to learn more in photo shop and hope one day to be able to create similar works.

Jimmy Craven – Roberto Blake

Roberto Blake, being from Brooklyn, New York, has a natural talent for depicting the way he sees certain articles and uniforms of clothing. Many of Roberto’s photo manipulations provide a vivid background, enjoyable textures, and fun patterns, all influenced by the main color of the clothing that the subject is wearing. As well as being a skilled artist, Roberto has becoming quite familiar with other types of work. He’s best with coding, graphics, and web design. He feels that the subjects he’s invested so much time into learning complement each other well, and he couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to use the techniques he’s acquired to expanding his knowledge of digital manipulation. Roberto is also a skilled artist in another Adobe programs such as Illustrator and InDesign. Roberto still has much to learn and has begun learning about Typography and at this time he will continue and hopes to always be able to further his skills in art of digital photography.

Samples of Roberto Blakes work can be found at his own website or in art galleries around the web. Roberto, like any other professional Artist has a portfolio and resume on his website as well as a Biography of how he ventured into the work of Digital Art. http://robertoblake.com/blog/

Desiree Reader – Nik Ainley

I chose one of the top Adobe Photoshop artists, Nik Ainley. According to his online Bio, Nik is a digital illustrator based in the UK. He has been working personally and on commission for about 10 years for all types of clients. The most fascinating part about Nik is that he is self taught. He discovered his love and skill for digital art while studying physics at the university. His skill surpassed his topic of study, and although he did graduate, he decided to continue in the digital art world. He works with both 2D and 3D in his images and also tries to combine the two.

I notice in his work it has a watery look to it. His images look rich and they glow. I love the images that are dark in the background and they have water splashing, and light seems to be coming over them from the top. His work looks amazing. It puts you into a trance.

You can find a portfolio of Nik Ailney’s work on his own website www.Shinybinary.com. This website was launched in 2004 and has over 5 million visitors. He also is represented by the United Kingdom Central Illustration Agency where he sells high quality art prints. He also is found on Facebook, CGSociety, Linkedin, Youtube, Photoshop spotlight, Behance and Deviantart.

Leslie Walch – Shadow Chin

Leiying Chin chose the name “Shadow” because she loved the effects of light and dark. Shadow is a freelance illustrator from China. Her inspirations come from music and her surroundings. The designs are full of color that just seems to flow throughout the image. The work has been shown in European galleries and on many blogs. Industrial design was her beginnings and she moved into studying art & design. Shortly after she started to do graphic design shed fell in love with digital art. Shadow will spend time making several drawings and then digitalize it on a PC. Shadow loves to observe the detail of things and feels that it makes her more sensitive to it’s artistic potential.

This is a list of her favorite websites.

deviantArt, that for me is where the digital art begins, and it’s the most developed online community in the world, and the best online art community, I’ve made most of my designer and artist friends from there, dA has definitely helped enhancing my career a lot, it’s my top fave.
Design By Humans, I love watching trendy tshirt artworks on DBH, plus it has a very creative and innovative team.

Brenda White @BrendaWhite24 – Jorik Dozy

I found Jorik Dozy to be an amazing Photoshop artist. He was born in Amsterdam, Holland and moved to Hollywood, CA at the age of 20. He graduated from the Gnomon School of Visual Effects. While in school, he free-lanced for the Digital Domain Company. After graduating, he moved to San Francisco and took a position with Industrial Light & Magic. He has worked on many films before moving to Singapore to work with ILM Singapore Company. He is the founder of International Art Collective “The Luminarium”.

His artwork is an inspiration to be because his landscapes are peaceful. The way he puts depth into the landscape is inviting. I feel I could step into the photo and walk right into the picture. I love the serenity that his photos display. He also does amazing visual effects for recent movies such as Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and I am Number Four. His blending of landscapes with people is subtle yet makes the people appear to be moving out of the photo.

His artwork can be found at www.akajork.com as well as other websites such as www.advancedphotoshop.co.uk and www.imdb.com. He has a LinkedIn address of http://sg.linkedin.com/in/jorikdozy.

Candice Benally – Martin Grohs

The artist I have chosen is Martin Grohs. He is based out of Germany and has been doing digital art for four years. His work with photography led to working with image processing in Photoshop and Illustrator. He has done work for commercial clients from all over the world including the United States, Brazil, Greece, Singapore and India. His work has also been featured in many publications such as Digital Artist and Advanced Photoshop.

What I like about this artist is how a uses his own photography to photomanipulate them in Photoshop or Illustrator. I like that he has his own style which has limited use of color in most of them but still stand out. I think it would be fun to manipulate your own personal pictures in Photoshop.

Martin has his very own website which is www.martin-grohs.com, his extensive portfolio can be found on this website along with some personal info and contact info.

Estelle Keaton – James Porto

James Porto was one of many photo shop artist I browsed through, but the first one that caught my attention. I think his skills are suburb and it appears he has definitely worked hard at perfecting his craft. I’m unsure as to when James started his photoshop career but I learned he takes care of every level of the process of his work. From pre production to the final product. James is both a photographer and a retoucher. His client’s range from advertising to editorial and he works with the biggest names in the business. From Nike to ESPN, Glamour, Sony, Verizon and the list goes on. He works collaboratively with art directors, editors and designers to create images tailored to their assignments, whether it’s the immediate read of an advertising concept or a haunting illustration of an editorial theme.

It’s easy to pinpoint what I like about James Porto’s art and it starts simply with a visit to his web page. The words real and unreal jump out at you on a white screen and you can click either or. These two words so simply describe James work. I love that he doesn’t just stay in one realm or the other but dabbles in both. And that is what attracted me to this artist. I noticed in a number of his photographs, the ones that were marked real, he causes us to stretch our mind and question what is in fact “real”. The image I choose reflects exactly that, it was done for a New York magazine cover. That had an article about a subway station yet to be built, but coming soon. The magazine wanted to portray the old with the new and wanted an elderly person next to the soon to be station looking at it in wonder. James used his aunt and did exactly that. Adding his own artist flair to it of course. The picture almost has a fantasy feel to it.

Fortunately James Porto has a website that can be found at http://www.jamesporto.com which showcases his brilliant and extremely talented work. Both in real and unreal. I highly suggest all to take a look, you will not be disappointed.

Linsey Garwood – Steeven Shaw

The artist that I chose is Steeven Shaw I came across him when I was searching facebook for Photoshop artists. He lives in Beau Bassin, Mauritius and has a web site and facebook page dedicated to his work. He is a very diverse person he is a photographer, digital artist, DJ, vocalist, writer and a composer.

I loved the way that he uses color in his digital edits and the images that he portrays. All of his images are very mythical looking and I have always found fantasy images to be interesting. There is one photo of his that I saw that really caught my eye of a woman with what seems to be angel wings. He showed the image before he photo shopped it and after and it was just completely amazing to me. I hope someday that I will be able to take images like the ones he has and change them into pieces of art.

His art can be found at his facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/steevenJK or at his website: http://www.SteevenShaw.com.

Elias Galvan – Trevor Van Meter @tvmstudio.

When I asked some of my artist friends if they knew anyone who did vector art two of them came forward with the same person. Trevor Van Meter (as he goes by) is a vector artist who, though remaining largely anonymous, takes on wide array of projects. While there’s not a whole lot of his background I could discern he does display a fair amount of his work history on his website and portfolio www.tvmstudio.com.

What I find inspiring about his art is that he is multi-disciplined. He creates both pixel and vector art and produces the occasional flash animation. Using a combination of Flash,Illustrator and Photoshop between the three. And that he doesn’t do what a lot of artists I personally know do, which is bury their art from the previous year where nobody can find it. Which happens to be a pet peve of mine.

http://www.tvmstudio.com/ Is his current website, with subpages for his old work/portfolios at http://vanbeater.com/vb2006.html and http://trevorvanmeter.com/tvmOld.html respectively. His most popular flash can be found at http://www.trevorvanmeter.com/flyguy/. His Facebook is http://www.facebook.com/theTVM and his Twitter is http://twitter.com/#!/tvmstudio.

Mara Zemicael – Nick La @nickla

Nick La is an illustrator and a web designer based in Toronto. He founded N.Design Studio, a graphic design company. His work has been showcased in multiple places on the Web and in print publications, such as WordPress themes and Computer Arts. In addition to his work for clients, Nick also creates Illustrator tutorials and stock icons.

I like Nick’s use of color. A lot of his work incorporates bright colors that also include realistic depictions of people. His work seems to have a dreamy and fun quality about it, which I like.

Nick’s work can be found on his website, http://ndesign-studio.com , www.ndesign-studio.com/flash and www.webdesginerwall.com. He also blogs and displays his work at Themify and IconDock.
Debbie Matzke – CRISTIANO SIQUEIRA @urbanartsbr

Website: CrisVector.com
Twitter: @urbanartsbr
Facebook: Cristiano Siqueira

On Facebook, Cristiano lists some of his activities and interests as science, fashion and writer. A favorite movie is 2001 A Space Odyssey and lists inspiration from Quentin Tarantino and Stanley Kubrick. I see all of these influences in his work. What I enjoy about his art, what makes me want to see more, is his versatility. From brilliant colors to simple, black and white.

Freelance designer, Cristiano Siqueira, A.K.A. Crisvector, is a mere 32 years old, lives in Sao Paulo, Brazil and has been a professional designer since 2005. This multi talented designer was trained in traditional arts and did not have any formal training with Illustrator or Photoshop. He learned by trial and error on the job, from friends and from software tutorials. One of his first responsibilities as a graphic designer was to redraw logotypes from scanned paper and make vector versions of them.

Like a classically trained dancer, his background in traditional art gave him the basic skills needed to develop his work in the digital environment. He envisions the concept first, plans the composition, lighting, shading and how everything will work in the whole picture and makes small sketches. He prepares with extensive research. “I try not to wait for inspiration to come to me, I go to meet the inspiration where it lives, in the research.”

On a technical side Cristiano’s favorite Illustrator tool is the blend too. He likes the mobility of the shapes, the editing possibilities and the precision. And then there is the master tool of tools, the Pen tool.

Other projects that Cristiano works on include editorial, print design, packaging, CD covers, advertising, magazines, food, toy packs. His work has been featured and published in numerous books and magazines including Advanced Photoshop, Illustration Now 3! and Digital Arts.

A few of his global clients include Microsoft, Nike, Mastercard Basil. In 2011 he received his first international prize from the Clio Awards in the category “Print: Public Services” for the comic pages done for AIDES.

Cherie Kirk – Bobby Chiu <s>@</s>bobbychiu

Bobby Chiu, (Born December 31, 1969) is an independent artist residing in Toronto, Canada where Imaginism Studios, founded by him, is located.

In Blogspot.com, Bobby explained how he started his career:

“I started my career at a company called Thinkway Toys when I was 17 years old, designing Disney, Pixar and Star Wars toys. With regards to schooling, I studied classical and computer animation at Sheridan College in Wyoming.”(2)

He now owns and operates Imaginism Studios, writes art books, and teaches workshops internationally. He has published a number of books, the most recent being The Perfect Bait, published in 2010.(1) Bobby Chiu and his Imaginism Studios associates were responsible for creating the characters in Alice In Wonderland (2010) movie, as well as other creative collaborations with Disney, Sony and Warner Bros. His latest work will be seen in Men In Black III, to be released in 2012.

After searching through a number of examples of talented AI artists, one individual stood out and away from the undercurrent of cynicism and pure artistic expression as different – there was depth, humor, irony, and for the most part, something positive in the work.

What makes Bobby Chiu’s work so riveting is how he is able to create these fantastical creatures and make them so believable, expressive, and convey so much meaning and feeling through their faces. You can easily fall in love or hate with his fictitious characters.

After learning more about this artist, three words best describe him: Talent, passion, and enthusiasm. The passion Bobby possesses is what makes him so successful. He is constantly searching for ways to learn, improve and grow as an artist, and share what he learns with others.

His company’s website: www.imaginismstudios.com.

He imparts some great gems of wisdom on Twitter – Bobby Chiu

He is also on Facebook – Bobby Chiu and The Perfect Bait

He and his staff teach online courses at http://schoolism.com

Examples of Bobby Chiu’s work are easily found on websites that cite top Adobe Illustrator artists as well as Google searches in his name, or citing Alice In Wonderland or MIB III and his name.

Alexandra Phelps – Ryan Putnam @RypeArts

An illustrator artist that I found has extraordinary work is Colorado native, Ryan Putnam. He is an illustrator artist, graphic and web designer who is fluent in several programming technologies. Based out of Colorado Springs, his education includes a fine arts degree with a concentration in graphic design awarded from Colorado State University. He has been freehand drawing and experimenting with illustrations, painting, crocheting and wheel-throwing pottery his whole life. In addition, Ryan runs his own company, Rype Arts, and also maintains a blog called Vectips, which is dedicated to vector illustrations. Another thing that attracted me to Ryan is he is a contributing writer for “the Adobe IIIustrator CS4 Wow! Book.” His style is organic artistic expression.

Ryan Putnam’s work is inspiring to me because it is creative, playful, and original. The colors, details, and symmetry are the styles he uses in his work that stood out to me. Every detail in his art is accounted for. He does a fantastic job of making the main object in the picture the focal point while not losing any detail in the background of the illustration. This is important since mostly people only look at a picture for a few seconds. His works makes me want to do better in my illustrations, and it gives me ideas on how to be more creative.

There are several websites and social media outlets on which Ryan Putnam’s portfolio can be found. His own personal website can be located at http://ryanputnam.net/, his company website can be located at http://rypearts.com/branding-portfolio.html, his blog is located at http://vectips.com/, and his twitter handle is @RypeArts. In addition to these he is also located on facebook, linkedIn, and dribble.

Jason Wenk – Stephen Bliss

Website: http://www.stephenbliss.com/

Stephen Bliss is currently the Senior Artist at Rockstar Games NYC and is best known for his work on Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto videogame series. He has been working as a designer and illustrator since 1986, so he started out painting by hand. Now, he primarily uses Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Stephen began his career as an in-house artist for a fashion house in Tokyo before returning to his native England to work as a freelance illustrator. Since then, his work has been featured in numerous magazines including GQ, Time, I.D., Arena, and Vogue. He has created illustrations for Burton Snowboards, Absolut Vodka, Mountain Dew, MTV, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, and many other high-profile companies. He also started a t-shirt company called Steroid with his brother that sold shirts throughout Japan and the UK. He collaborates frequently with fellow Rockstar artist Anthony Macbain.

I have been a fan of the artwork in the Grand Theft Auto series since Stephen took over on GTA 3. His style looked fairly simple and generally consisted of very clean lines and gradients in a traditional comic book style. What impressed me, however, was the way that these seemingly simple images were able to capture and portray each character’s personality in just one image. Most of the characters from the games appear only in a single image, but that image manages to tell a lot about them through their pose, expression, clothing, and background setting. I was always impressed with the urban backgrounds and cityscapes that were often created using only two or three levels of monochromatic value. As the series has progressed over the course of four main games and several spinoffs, Stephen has altered his style slightly with each new title. As the technology behind the games themselves has progressed and allowed the graphics to improve, Stephen’s illustrations have taken on more depth and detail to match, but have also maintained the series’ recognizable style.

Due to Rockstar’s massive marketing campaigns for the popular GTA series, Stephen’s work has been seen on TV, billboards, posters, magazines, stickers, t-shirts, and of course video games. It is not difficult to find his artwork online either. Examples can be found at his website, www.stephenbliss.com, the website of the artist management company that represents him, http://www.ba-reps.com/artists/stephen-bliss#image_291790, on the site for Rockstar’s most recent GTA game, http://www.gta4.net/artwork/, as well as various other sites online.

Josh Mirto – Chris Leavens @chrisleavens

Chris Leavens is a talented illustrator that caught my attention. He went to school at Penn State University for film and video. He then moved to Los Angeles to make it in the film industry. He then found his true career calling as an illustrator, graphic designer, and web designer which still continues today.

My favorite aspect of Chris Leavens artwork is the attention to detail in the outrageous landscapes he illustrates. I also like the bizarre characters created in his work. When put together they make highly imaginative images.

His work is showcased online at his personal website which is www.chrisleavens.com. On the website there are links to Chris around the web at twitter, facebook, and flickr.

Diana Huber
- Cristiano Siqueira @chrisvector

! Cristiano Siqueira is a Brazilian born professional illustrator. He has been working professionally since 2005. His work can be found in many various books and magazines as well as in some editorials and comics. He states “Digital art and vector illustration are my passion and all my work is created in these formats.” In 2011 he received his first international clio award for his work on a public service comic done for AIDES, in partnership with Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

! To pick just one artist to talk about from the scores of amazing individuals is difficult. To find one whose work speaks to you – this is a daunting task. As for Cristiano’s work, what I like is his variety. He works in 2D as well as 3D and he also goes from the real to the surreal. His work is both simple and very complex presenting an astounding representation of what can be done in the digital and vector genres.

! Cristiano’s work can be found at crisvector.com. He can also be found on twitter at twitter.com/crisvector and on facebook at www.facebook.com/crisvector.

Kimberly Harris – Charles Harker

I chose Charles Harker as an artist of interest because he creates imaginary landscapes in his work. I am a painter and some of my work is about imaginary landscapes but my medium is watercolor instead of vector graphics. Our work has some similarities in the use of color, graphics and pattern.

Charles Harker is originally from Phoenix, Arizona and grew up here. He went to the Bay Area to study fine art at The University of California Berkley. He then taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Now he divides his time now between Phoenix and Mexico City. He travels freely with is computer creating vector landscapes. You can see the influence of both places in his work.

The works are influenced by the landscape of the southwest and also Mexico. They are whimsical and the use lots of patterning in the detail of the work. I find them pleasing and amusing. They have a lyrical sense about them. Much of the vector art I saw online is more cartoons oriented or futuristic. Mr. Harker’s work has a lighthearted sense about the subject matter. It is vibrant, colorful and visually appealing.

His work part of a public art installation in Chandler, Arizona called “Art in Transit”. He has 6 large backlit pieces located in different areas throughout downtown Chandler.

He recently published a book with 44 of his imaginary landscapes. It is called “The Imaginary Landscapes of Charles Harker: Recent Work Utilizing Vector Graphics”. He started creating these landscapes in Photoshop and now has progressed to Illustrator to achieve the graphic qualities he is looking to develop.

You can find his work on his website: www.charlesharker.com. You can email him at charker@hotmail.com. His prints are on line at imagekind.com.

Just wanted to inform you that a former student – @jonthevoice Jon McConnell, who took his first ever animation class last spring, specifically, my Animation Art 184 class involving Adobe Flash, has a chance to have an animation of his featured here in Arizona during half-time of the upcoming Superbowl on Channel 12. The local station’s 12 News program sponsored a “12 Seconds of Fame” contest in which anyone could submit a 12 second video telling how 12 News connects them to Arizona.

Jon was inspired to use his developing talent in animation to create his submission, and has been informed that he is one of the three finalists. The three finalists videos are currently displayed on the 12 News Facebook page, and anyone with a Facebook account can view them and vote. I won’t try to tell you “how” you should vote, but I will say that I visited the page, viewed all three videos and seeing the cleverness of Jon’s video and knowing what goes into producing even just a 12 second good quality animation….He got my vote hands down. If you go there to vote, you will know which one is his because it is the only one of the three that is animated, and incidentally he, himself (or at least his image) stars in it.

Below is the direct link to the 12 News Facebook page where you can vote, and then share the link with others as well. So just click on it and let’s help one of our own students work get the exposure that it deserves…

A camera raw image file contains minimally processed data from the image sensor of either a digital camera, image scanner, or motion picture film scanner. Raw files are so named because they are not yet processed and therefore are not ready to be printed or edited with a bitmap graphics editor. Normally, the image is processed by a raw converter in a wide-gamut internal colorspace where precise adjustments can be made before conversion to a “positive” file format such as TIFF or JPEG for storage, printing, or further manipulation, which often encodes the image in a device-dependent colorspace. These images are often described as “RAW image files”, although there is not actually one single raw file format. In fact there are dozens if not hundreds of such formats in use by different models of digital equipment (like cameras or film scanners).[1]
Raw image files are sometimes called digital negatives, as they fulfill the same role as negatives in film photography: that is, the negative is not directly usable as an image, but has all of the information needed to create an image. Likewise, the process of converting a raw image file into a viewable format is sometimes called developing a raw image, by analogy with the film development process used to convert photographic film into viewable prints. The selection of the final choice of image rendering is part of the process of white balancing and color grading.
Like a photographic negative, a raw digital image may have a wider dynamic range or color gamut than the eventual final image format, and it preserves most of the information of the captured image. The purpose of raw image formats is to save, with minimum loss of information, data obtained from the sensor, and the conditions surrounding the capturing of the image (the metadata).

Click the picture to download an example of the a raw photo and practice making adjustments.

Here is the header I designed for The Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University. Initially, I did a photo shoot with the students. Once the photo shoot was complete I selected the most appropriate picture. The retouch took a little more work than expected. The gentleman second from the left had a very serious look on his face, so using a smile from a different picture of him I super imposed a pleasant, happy to be here, expression. The female second from the right was gazing at something off in the distance so I incorporate eyes, from a different photo, focused on the camera to give her a more engaged disposition. After some light retouching I added a red gradient and text. Now my banner is ready for prime time. I included other pictures for the shoot including the original image I used for the banner.

I chose Nik Ainley, a UK based designer who was studying physics in college when he stumbled upon Photoshop and fell in love. I like how his work often mixes realistic images with fantasy as well as his work with typography. As a complete beginner in Photoshop, it is a relief to know that Nik started his passion for graphic design halfway through college.

http://stoned-circle.net/ukiyoe/illustrator/

I chose Masahiko Saga, a Japanese digital artist who primarily specializes in Photoshop and Illustrator. A major influence of his is the eccentric 18th-century Japanese painter Ito Jakhuchu, and as you can tell from Saga’s work, Saga strikes a nice balance between keeping the old traditional Japanese print-look while infusing it with modern design and technique. Ito did a lot of work with traditional outdoor scenes, specifically birds, and I like how Saga has channeled that influence to create a pretty unique style.

http://www.microbot.ch/html5/

I chose David Fuhrer as the digital design artist who most grabbed my attention. As an illustrator, he tends to come up with his own material, instead of manipulating existing content, which I find to be more refreshing than most Photoshop artists. He also does a lot of sci-fi/outer worldly work, which, as a sci-fi nerd myself, I find to be most enjoyable

Here’s a blurb from his ’About Me’ page:

David is a self taught freelance artist born 1985, in the capital of Switzerland, Bern. Grown up in the 90’s has influenced David’s work. He started experimenting with Visuals in the early days of the Computer.

With a focus on illustration, and an even tighter focus on intricate detailing David Fuhrer’s high scale Artworks are some of the most inspiring and exciting work to flourish from the community. His imagination in unity with his broad library of skills has allowed him to create some of the most out-of-this-world images.

Fuhrers work is a rare treat for the eyes and mind as the depth of his work is as mesmerizing as the feel that his pieces exude.

Steven Kreschollek

http://www.jesar-one.com/

Heiko Klug is a German digital artist who started in graffiti before discovering Photoshop. I was impressed by the incredible level of detail present in many of his works. He must work with very large scale images, because it seems like you can keep zooming in on his work and still find finer levels of detail. I also like the way he combines free-flowing organic and geometric shapes.

Jason Wenk

http://kochis.net/wp/

Randy Kochis is an abstract digital artist with a background in physics and engineering. It’s this background that leads to a great deal of geometric influence in his work which really caught my eye. I particularly enjoy his use of color to enhance photos of everyday scenes.

Jason Rhodey

http://www.hejz.com/2829/work

Peter Jaworowski is a partner of the Warsaw-based creative agency, Arts Thanea. He is also a design director and has worked with some of the biggest brands worldwide. I found several photoshop artists whos work I found interesting but I kept coming back to this sight. I found Peter’s work very intricate and beautiful. I liked the variety in his designs, the complexity and the creativity. His use of color I think, also has a lot to do with why I was drawn to his work.

Joshua Watson

This picture by Jeff Purnawan is crazy. The attention to detail is impressive. All the car lights have reflections that show how much work went into this picture.

Kevin Tugenberg

http://jericosantander.com/

Check out these cool photoshop pieces by Jerico Santander. The imagination at work is incredible and very unique.

Joshua Mirto

http://www.neilduerden.co.uk/

Neil Duerden is an international illustrator/artist who creates advertisements for magazines and private commissions. He uses a combination of mixed media to compose his advertisements; photography, vectors, cgi, and illustrations. Many elements of his work stand out to me, but the most appealing would include his use of color, the amount of detail, and the overall composition that these elements create together. This mixed media approach creates the illusion of whimsy routed in reality, making his advertisements interesting to the eye. The audience is forced to stop and study the product and take an interest in the advertisement.

Nichole Neill

http://www.theuntappedsource.com/

I found a very interesting photo shop artist named Nickolai Angelus Stone. The images I viewed in his gallery were very intriguing. He very realistically combines surreal characters with traditional backgrounds. They are done in a way to give the viewer the feeling they are looking

at a visual interpretation of a dream. The unusual effects made me want to stare deep into

the images to capture all he was portraying. He uses a lot of detail and his characters offer

a depth that shows not only his Photoshop skills , but his natural talent as an artist.

Truly an artist to keep an eye on.

http://www.jermilex.com/

The above untitled image is by Photoshop artist Jeremy Vickery. This image caught my eye for a few reasons, the first of which is that I have always been attracted to images of this nature which I have come to know as “fantasy-scape” art. This particular “fantasy-scape” grabbed my attention because of the bright colors and the grandeur of the image while still maintaining great detail. I love that this image has everything from old world castles to modern skyscrapers and rockets to futuristic domes and space stations, all seamlessly and artfully placed together in such a way that it seems like it was all together to being with.

Louisiana Fried Chicken was created and developed by Joe Dion. After a decade of experience with Jack-in-the-Box and Pioneer Chicken franchises, Joe decided to start his own restaurant. Over a year in development, LFC was born out of many research trips to New Orleans and experimentation in the family garage. The first store opened in August of 1976 in Los Angeles and the response by the public was so overwhelming that 10 company stores were established by 1979. Joe sold his stores and began licensing the trademark and recipes to independent operators.
