Inspirational Photoshop Artist 2012

Students in Dr. Eric S. Millers (@svisionaryScottsdale Community College (CIS 120 – Spring 2012) Adobe Photoshop Class were required to search the web and locate an inspirational photoshop artist, to write a few paragraphs about the artist and to include their favorite image by the artist.  Here are the amazing artist they selected.

Andy Pickering – Jerico Santander @jericosantander

Jerico Santander is a 25 year old digital artist from the Canary Islands of Spain.  He was an artist at a very young age until a few years ago traded in his paper and pencils for a digital format.  He has worked for a small creative agency called “Atutiplen”.  He has since started to work as an independent freelance artist.  He has worked for and with agencies and companies ranging all over the globe, including companies such as Dreamworks, Nissan, Bud Light and Hugo Boss.

Self described as using elements of colors, balance, and surrealism as keystones to his work through platforms of photography, 3D graphics and digital painting to bring forth his vision of art.  He inspires me by how his images evoke emotion and creativity, almost in a dream like fashion.  Photography is near and dear to my heart and I believe should always be the basis on formulating a photoshopped image (at least it will be for me).  Although his images are more cartoon-like than photography based, the colors really attract me to his images.

He has a website at www.jericosantander.com.  He also can be found on multiple websites such as the Behance Network, Gods of art.com, Design modo and Artistic Things.  He has been featured in Format Magazine.  He does have a twitter and Facebook account, but doesn’t appear to use those as his primary networking sources.

Paula Klimas – Maciej Mizer

The famous graphic artist Maciej Mizer, otherwise known as mOsk, creates photoshop images for many different companies. He works with honda, nike, ecko unltd. and many other well- known brands to create eye-catching advertising campaigns. He lives and works out of Poland and specializes in 3D graphics, illustrations, web design, and photography. Mizer has a facebook presence, and also is featured on Fuse and Behance.

I love his artwork in particular because it is super colorful, but not overwhelming. All of his pieces have really balanced color schemes, positive and negative balance, and strong placement. I like that he incorporates natural colors and objects like leaves and animals into some of his more digital pieces. He also creates fantasy scenes that showcase how vivid his imagination is, as well as how skilled he is in graphic design. I definitely can see why his work is in such high demand, and is recognized and respected by artists around the world.

Mizer’s work can be found on his own website, as well as Facebook, Fuse, and Behance, as well as sites like DeviantArt that are devoted to diehard art fans. He regularly Facebooks and is receptive to his fans and seems eager to help others learn the tricks of his craft.

Austin Howard – Rado Javor

Rado Javor is a digital painter from Slovakia. His work ranges from historic to futuristic. He uses a Wacom tablet and Photoshop to render his pictures on a Windows 7 machine. His interests are painting, HI-FI music, cars, book, history, and photography.

Rado’s art is spectacularly detailed and vivid. I like his work because I am a big fan of history and the future and he has managed to reach both ends of that spectrum. His art has phenomenal clarity as that of a photograph and makes it look like he was there in the places with a camera instead of ideas coming out of a person’s head. (plus he does some Star Wars pictures which I am a huge fan of).

Rado’s artwork can be found at http://radojavor.deviantart.com/ and on his own personal blog http://rado-javor.blogspot.com/ along with pictures of his travels and interests.

Bill Mitchell – Bill Atkinson @billatk

Bill Atkinson has a long history of artistic and software development. As a member of the original Macintosh team, he designed most of the original interface, wrote QuickDraw (the Mac’s original graphics engine), MacPaint (a bitmap graphics painting program) and HyperCard (hypermedia linking) software. He most recently wrote a free IOS app: PhotoCard .

Camera: Hasselblad medium format camera, with a 39 megapixel digital back.
Printer: Epson Stylus Pro 11880 with Archival Pigment Ink & Brilliance Chromata Canvas.
Software: Photoshop

His photos are simple but detailed. The colors are intense but not over saturated. The canvas prints look like paintings. The finished products are of extremely high quality and typically sell for between $1,200 and $2,600.

Bill’s prints can be found in multiple fine-art galleries: Capture / Healdsburg, CA; Dostal Studio / Sausalito, CA;  The Ansel Adams Gallery / Yosemite, CA and The Museum Works Gallery / Aspen, CO.

Debbie Matzke  – NEIL DUERDEN

Illustrate the Future!

That is, Aquarian, Neil Duerden’s mantra. He finds inspiration in the world around him. It can be a directive from a client or noticing the details in nature. He is a master at combining both a directive and nature’s details. For example, he finds inspiration from the seeds of a sliced cucumber.

Neil is a freelance designer with over 20 years of experience. Prior to taking the plunge to go on his own he worked as an illustrator for a large design agency. What pushed him to move on was his frustration with safe advertising solutions vs. creative solutions.

What I like about his work is he does push the boundaries of advertising with creative solutions. His images are powerful and speak on their own as noted in the Porche ad. He takes his creativity in a totally opposite direction with the image of a woman in green advertising beauty and serenity and then he branches in whimsy with the Nissan display.

Neil enjoys the challenge of working on project collaborations. The work takes a free flow pattern of experimentation. He says “ No one can deny that after a truly great new joint piece they take a little of each others’ style on board.” Sometimes these collaborations change an artist’s style completely.

Paulette Kim – Nik Ainley

After an extensive search for an artist who uses Adobe Photoshop as their primary design tool, UK-based designer, Nik Ainley, has an impressive portfolio. Although Nik possesses a degree in Physics and professionally started a career in web design, he is currently a freelance digital illustrator. What started out as random Photoshop doodling as a hobby turned into a love for digital design. Scoring well-known clients such as Adobe, British Airways, Capital One, ESPN, Esquire, MTV, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, Nike, Pepsi, Starbucks, UNICEF, Vodafone, and so on exemplifies this Photoshop artist’s talent. His portfolio mainly consists of intricate typeface and graphically manipulated portraits.

What I like about Nik’s work is his elaborate typography and his clever mix of 2D and 3D techniques. His typeface designs are intricate, vivid, flamboyant, yet subtle; it reminds me of urban murals and graffiti. His infusion of 2D and 3D elements exude energy and movement. He has an eye for great color choices and texture combinations. In my opinion, much of his work is futuristic-looking, attention-getting, creatively-designed eye candy with simple subjects. The idea of being a self-taught Photoshop artist and having furthered his expertise in digital design successfully is an inspiration in itself.

If anyone is interested in Nik Ainley and the hype I’ve briefly reported, check out the artist’s portfolio at www.shinybinary.com. The website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Nik also has digital presence on FaceBook, LinkedIn, YouTube, DeviantArt (blog-like site), Behance Network, CG Society, and Photoshop Spotlight. Tutorials by Nik are also available online.

DJ Lockwood – Peter Jaworowski @thehejz

Peter Jaworowski is Design Director & Co-Founder of Warsaw-based creative agency, Ars Thanea and Co-owner of The Hejz, which is a portfolio of all his work.  Born in Poland, Peter was into playing multi-player games when a friend showed him an early version of Paint Shop Pro.  He then switched to Adobe PhotoShop 6 and has been working in the creative field for about five years.  He studied at Warsaw Higher Institute of Information Technology.   At only 20 years old, Pete’s clients include CocaCola, Nokia, Mercedes, Mazda, Nike, Nissan, Sony PlayStation, Puma, Visa, Martini, Nokia, Discovery Channel, Samsonite, Bacardi, Polaroid, and Avatar the Game.  He has received many awards and honors for his advertising pieces and been featured in various magazines including Luerzer’s Archive, Page, Computer Arts (UK, FR), Advanced Photoshop Magazine, idN Magazine, Joia Magazine, PSD Magazine, Joice, Aktivist, Bak, & Idea Design Magazine.  He has been involved in judging international work as a Grand Jury Member of the New York Festivals 2010 – Innovative Advertising Awards and KTR (Polish Cannes Lions Representative) 2010 & 2011.

I enjoy the imagination Peter brings to his images, and there are tons of them on line.  He daily visits websites like Behance and others to grab pictures he uses in his images.  He brings lots of color, detail, and motion to still pictures including 3D effects.   His pictures are innovative and show originality.  I enjoy the picture I chose because of the dramatic lighting effects including the eye which is so real.  Other images he has done show lot of bright colors and again white sunlight splashes or dots which I appreciate on a dark background.

Googling “Peter Jaworowski” shows he is quite popular and well known for his work as you can tell by his clients.   Below is where you can find him:

Andrew Gleason - Alberto Seveso

Through extensive search online I found an artist by the name of Alberto Seveso, a photo shop artist from Italy. As I am into photography myself, I tried to find an artist who still has apparent use of photography based vector art. Alberto Seveso primarily uses black and white photographs for his base and then goes and adds in splashes of color in interesting shapes and patterns. Most of his subjects are just up against a black background with dramatic shadowing and contrasts. The portraits in his work all appear to be breaking apart of flaking off of themselves. Seveso has done edits for magazines for many athletes, including Kelly Slater and Michael Phelps along with some album art and covers.

I couldn’t find a lot of information about Seveso’s background but his edits seem to be very technology based and futuristic. A lot of the people that are breaking apart in his edits have gears, plates, or other mechanical objects underneath their skin. His images are very impressive and inspiring to me. I could definitely see myself wanting to try to imitate some of his works. I’m sure learning to create such intricate pieces of art took many years of practice though. Viewing his collections gave me many great ideas. I am very excited to learn more in photo shop and hope one day to be able to create similar works.

 Jimmy Craven – Roberto Blake

Roberto Blake, being from Brooklyn, New York, has a natural talent for depicting the way he sees certain articles and uniforms of clothing. Many of Roberto’s photo manipulations provide a vivid background, enjoyable textures, and fun patterns, all influenced by the main color of the clothing that the subject is wearing. As well as being a skilled artist, Roberto has becoming quite familiar with other types of work. He’s best with coding, graphics, and web design. He feels that the subjects he’s invested so much time into learning complement each other well, and he couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to use the techniques he’s acquired to expanding his knowledge of digital manipulation. Roberto is also a skilled artist in another Adobe programs such as Illustrator and InDesign. Roberto still has much to learn and has begun learning about Typography and at this time he will continue and hopes to always be able to further his skills in art of digital photography.

Samples of Roberto Blakes work can be found at his own website or in art galleries around the web. Roberto, like any other professional Artist has a portfolio and resume on his website as well as a Biography of how he ventured into the work of Digital Art.  http://robertoblake.com/blog/

Desiree Reader – Nik Ainley

I chose one of the top Adobe Photoshop artists, Nik Ainley. According to his online Bio, Nik is a digital illustrator based in the UK. He has been working personally and on commission  for about 10 years for all types of clients. The most fascinating part about Nik is that he is self taught. He discovered his love and skill for digital art while studying physics at the university. His skill surpassed his topic of study, and although he did graduate, he decided to continue in the digital art world. He works with both 2D and 3D in his images and also tries to combine the two.

I notice in his work it has a watery look to it. His images look rich and they glow. I love the images that are dark in the background and they have water splashing, and light seems to be coming over them from the top. His work looks amazing. It puts you into a trance.

You can find a portfolio of Nik Ailney’s work on his own website  www.Shinybinary.com. This website was launched in 2004 and has over 5 million visitors. He also is represented by the United Kingdom Central Illustration Agency where he sells high quality art prints.  He also is found on Facebook, CGSociety, Linkedin, Youtube, Photoshop spotlight, Behance and Deviantart.

Leslie Walch – Shadow Chin

Leiying Chin chose the name “Shadow” because she loved the effects of light and dark.  Shadow is a freelance illustrator from China. Her inspirations come from music and her surroundings. The designs are full of color that just seems to flow throughout the image. The work has been shown in European galleries and on many blogs. Industrial design was her beginnings and she moved into studying art & design. Shortly after she started to do graphic design shed fell in love with digital art. Shadow will spend time making several drawings and then digitalize it on a PC. Shadow loves to observe the detail of things and feels that it makes her more sensitive to it’s artistic potential.

This is a list of her favorite websites.

deviantArt, that for me is where the digital art begins, and it’s the most developed online community in the world, and the best online art community, I’ve made most of my designer and artist friends from there, dA has definitely helped enhancing my career a lot, it’s my top fave.
Design By Humans, I love watching trendy tshirt artworks on DBH, plus it has a very creative and innovative team.
Threadless, they are the most creative and lovely designing company! And I enjoy the community spirit on Threadless, no to mention watching the most creative and interesting tshirt designs very week.
DepthCore, the very essential of world digital arts, plus lots of my top favorite designers and illustrators are in DepthCore.
ProcessRecess, blog of my favorite illustrator James Jean, he’s posting very precious sketches

You can find Shadow Chen on the web at:

www.onlycreative.com.au
www.abduzeedo.com
www.infectious.com
website – SaltyShadow.com
Behance – Behance.net/saltyshadow
DeviantArt – SaltyShadow.DeviantArt.com/

I personally like the flow of her work. I am not an illustrator and appreciate that she uses a lot of color and texture to create the images. I like her insect images very much.

Brenda White @BrendaWhite24 – Jorik Dozy

I found Jorik Dozy to be an amazing Photoshop artist.  He was born in Amsterdam, Holland and moved to Hollywood, CA at the age of 20.  He graduated from the Gnomon School of Visual Effects.  While in school, he free-lanced for the Digital Domain Company.  After graduating, he moved to San Francisco and took a position with Industrial Light & Magic.  He has worked on many films before moving to Singapore to work with ILM Singapore Company.  He is the founder of International Art Collective “The Luminarium”.

His artwork is an inspiration to be because his landscapes are peaceful.  The way he puts depth into the landscape is inviting.  I feel I could step into the photo and walk right into the picture.  I love the serenity that his photos display.  He also does amazing visual effects for recent movies such as Transformers:  Dark of the Moon, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and I am Number Four.  His blending of landscapes with people is subtle yet makes the people appear to be moving out of the photo.

His artwork can be found at www.akajork.com as well as other websites such as www.advancedphotoshop.co.uk and www.imdb.com.  He has a LinkedIn address of http://sg.linkedin.com/in/jorikdozy.

Candice Benally – Martin Grohs

The artist I have chosen is Martin Grohs. He is based out of Germany and has been doing digital art for four years. His work with photography led to working with image processing in Photoshop and Illustrator. He has done work for commercial clients from all over the world including the United States, Brazil, Greece, Singapore and India. His work has also been featured in many publications such as Digital Artist and Advanced Photoshop.

What I like about this artist is how a uses his own photography to photomanipulate them in Photoshop or Illustrator. I like that he has his own style which has limited use of color in most of them but still stand out. I think it would be fun to manipulate your own personal pictures in Photoshop.

Martin has his very own website which is www.martin-grohs.com, his extensive portfolio can be found on this website along with some personal info and contact info.

Estelle Keaton – James Porto

James Porto was one of many photo shop artist I browsed through, but the first one that caught my attention. I think his skills are suburb and it appears he has definitely worked hard at perfecting his craft. I’m unsure as to when James started his photoshop career but I learned he takes care of every level of the process of his work. From pre production to the final product. James is both a photographer and a retoucher. His client’s range from advertising to editorial and he works with the biggest names in the business. From Nike to ESPN, Glamour, Sony, Verizon and the list goes on. He works collaboratively with art directors, editors and designers to create images tailored to their assignments, whether it’s the immediate read of an advertising concept or a haunting illustration of an editorial theme.

It’s easy to pinpoint what I like about James Porto’s art and it starts simply with a visit to his web page. The words real and unreal jump out at you on a white screen and you can click either or. These two words so simply describe James work. I love that he doesn’t just stay in one realm or the other but dabbles in both. And that is what attracted me to this artist. I noticed in a number of his photographs, the ones that were marked real, he causes us to stretch our mind and question what is in fact “real”. The image I choose reflects exactly that, it was done for a New York magazine cover. That had an article about a subway station yet to be built, but coming soon. The magazine wanted to portray the old with the new and wanted an elderly person next to the soon to be station looking at it in wonder. James used his aunt and did exactly that. Adding his own artist flair to it of course. The picture almost has a fantasy feel to it.

Fortunately James Porto has a website that can be found at http://www.jamesporto.com which showcases his brilliant and extremely talented work. Both in real and unreal. I highly suggest all to take a look, you will not be disappointed.

Linsey Garwood – Steeven Shaw

The artist that I chose is Steeven Shaw I came across him when I was searching facebook for Photoshop artists. He lives in Beau Bassin, Mauritius and has a web site and facebook page dedicated to his work.  He is a very diverse person he is a photographer, digital artist, DJ, vocalist, writer and a composer.

I loved the way that he uses color in his digital edits and the images that he portrays. All of his images are very mythical looking and I have always found fantasy images to be interesting. There is one photo of his that I saw that really caught my eye of a woman with what seems to be angel wings. He showed the image before he photo shopped it and after and it was just completely amazing to me. I hope someday that I will be able to take images like the ones he has and change them into pieces of art.

His art can be found at his facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/steevenJK or at his website: http://www.SteevenShaw.com.

Patrick Morrison – Martin Grohs’s

After looking through pages of Photoshop designers’ work there was one artist that stuck out to me and that was Martin Grohs. He is a 24-year-old digital artist based out of Germany. Most of his art consists of image manipulation, which was the reason his art caught me eye. He does commercial work with clients in The U.S., Brazil, Germany, Greece, India and Singapore.I chose this artist because his art was inspiring for me. I am a fan of photo manipulation and I think he is very creative. I like how he pulls the strings of reality but not too much to make it over the top. I believe he has a good balance of real and not real.

Martin Grohs’s work can be found on his website: http://www.martin-grohs.com/#/HI. He is also on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/martingrohs, and on Deviant art: http://grohsartig.deviantart.com/

Ruby Mora – Arthur Szyguliski

I have chosen Photoshop artist. Artur Szyguliski, born in Worclaw Poland.  The title of this image is The Dream of Flying.   I love his art it has feeling and emotion.  I do not know what the tree means but it has life and movement. The tree reminds me of how humans react to pain, reaching out while still being held down by uncertainty.
